Offset vs. Digital Printing
Offset and digital printing are very different printing processes, and it is important to know these differences when choosing which printing method to use.
Offset printing includes burning the desired image onto a plate, transferring the image to a rubber blanket and then to the sheet of paper. It uses the process of lithography to attract ink to the areas to be printed and repel ink from the non-printing areas. This process produces great image quality, and can be a very cost-effective choice for high-volume jobs, as the unit cost goes down as the quantity goes up. The sheet-fed nature of this technique makes it efficient as well, and it can accommodate much larger sheet sizes than digital printing. This is the process we use for our pharmaceutical inserts and other miniature folded pieces. If you have a job with a high quantity and/or large sheet size, offset printing is typically the best choice.
Digital printing, on the other hand, is ideal for fast turn-around and competitive pricing on small quantity color printing. Digital printers use either toner or liquid ink to print images that are digitally sent to the device directly on to the paper. This process is preferable for shorter runs, because there is a much lower set-up cost, and it also produces less waste and fewer variations than offset printing. Another advantage of this technique is the option to utilize variable data printing, which allows you to customize each printed piece for an individual customer. This is especially useful when printing direct mail pieces.
